Did you know that it’s National Almond Day today? Well, we did, so we’re offering 10% off whole and ground almonds today (16th February) and tomorrow – both 250g bags from Goodness Foods, whole almonds are £4.29, or £3.86 in Fab Feb; ground almonds are £3.89, or £3.50 with 10% off.
Almonds are a fantastic addition to our kitchen cupboards – I add ground almonds to cake mix to add a Battenburg type flavour to a plain sponge. They’re a vital ingredient to Bakewell tart of course, which is one of my favourites, especially the raspberry version from The Vegan Cakery. Almonds are useful for all sorts of things – making marzipan, almond milk, butter, amaretti, etc etc. You can of course just eat them as a snack!
The almond is a nutritionally dense food and a 100 gram serving is a rich source (>20% of the Daily value) of the B vitamins riboflavin and niacin, vitamin E, and the essential minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and zinc. The same serving size is also a good source (10–19% DV) of the B vitamins thiamine, vitamin B6, and folate; choline; and the essential mineral potassium. They are also rich in dietary fiber, monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats, fats which potentially may lower LDL cholesterol.
