Fab Feb – Slicing Sausage

slicing-sausage website picI’ve included this as my very fussy daughter loves this stuff and a whole sausage can disappear in a day in our house.  Hornett Wholefoods sells a 300g sausage for £3.17, but for 9th and 10th February, you can buy it for £2.85.  It’s a frozen item that you need to defrost before you use it – Miss Hornett Wholefoods eats it sliced on toast.  Here’s a recipe:

Savoury Sausage Tartlets

Serve tarts warm or cold with salad. Ideal for packed lunches. (Makes 6)

1x250g packed fresh ready to use shortcrust pastry
2 tbsp sunflower oil
1 medium onion, chopped
150g Tivall Vegetarian Slicing Sausage, diced
125g broccoli florets, blanched
50g Cheddar cheese, grated
2 eggs, size 3
225ml milk
salt and pepper

  1. Divide pastry into six and use to line six 10cm tartlet tins, placing on baking sheet.
  2. Heat oil in a frying pan and fry onion until soft and turning golden. Drain on absorbent kitchen paper and mix with diced slicing sausage. Divide between pastry tartlets. Add broccoli and sprinkle over cheese.
  3. Beat eggs with milk and seasoning and pour into pastry cases. Cook at 200°C/400°F/Mark 6 for about 25-30 minutes until golden. If preferred line 24cm flan tin with pastry and increase cooking time by 5-10 minutes.
